{"id":1131,"date":"2019-07-23T16:18:38","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T20:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/?p=1131"},"modified":"2021-05-25T15:24:40","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T19:24:40","slug":"know-need-jeep-pcm-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/know-need-jeep-pcm-replacement\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Know If You Need a Jeep PCM Replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/auto-computers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Powertrain Control Module (PCM)<\/a> is the computer that controls most of your Jeep\u2019s essential systems. The PCM controls the engine timing, the fuel to air ratio, the transmission, and the anti-lock brakes, along with dozens of other smaller functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your PCM fails, it can cause you to lose fuel efficiency and possibly fail your state\u2019s emission inspection. It can also lead to backfiring, difficulty starting the engine, rough shifting, and rapid wear and tear on vital engine components.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Common Symptoms of Jeep PCM Failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because your PCM controls many of your car\u2019s systems, there are a large number of possible symptoms. The most obvious is if your code scanner is reading any code that begins with \u201cP06\u201d. These codes all identify specific PCM problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The check engine light is on<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Your engine stutters or stalls<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Gas mileage has inexplicably gotten worse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Your Jeep is shifting erratically or seemingly at random<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Your Jeep has difficulty starting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main reason people spend so much on PCM repair is that many people, even professional mechanics, often misdiagnose PCM problems as engine or transmission issues, and attempt costly repairs to those systems. You could buy several PCMs for the cost of rebuilding one transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse yet, rough shifting and poor engine timing can cause damage over time, which means that the longer the problem with your PCM goes undiagnosed, the more you\u2019re likely to end up spending on repairs down the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing any of these problems, it\u2019s a good idea to have your codes read before spending a lot of money on mechanical repairs. At the very least, you\u2019ll eliminate a possible cheap repair option. At best, you\u2019ll be able to repair or replace your PCM before anything else gets damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Diagnosing the Problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if your PCM is sending a fault code, the problem may not be with the PCM itself. It may be with the wiring harness. Perform a visual inspection of the wiring, and replace any corroded contacts or frayed wires. If everything looks good from a visual standpoint, follow up with a multimeter to make sure you didn\u2019t miss anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common problem is if your battery ground has shorted out to the vehicle\u2019s frame. Inspect your battery contacts themselves, too. Low voltage is a cause of many PCM faults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, it\u2019s a good idea to perform other diagnostic procedures based on the exact error code you\u2019re reading. We\u2019ve written separately about several of these codes, in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCM repair blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One common problem that affects Jeep PCMs \u2013 particularly PCMs for the Jeep Grand Cherokee \u2013 is poor soldering on the 5-volt power connection. If all other tests have failed, you can try re-flowing the solder. We\u2019ll go over this process in the next section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/shutterstock_1206001630.jpg\" alt=\"Jeep PCM open car bonnet\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/shutterstock_1206001630.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/shutterstock_1206001630-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.solopcms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/shutterstock_1206001630-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Repairing Your PCM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repairing a damaged PCM is difficult for anyone who isn\u2019t experienced with soldering on a printed circuit board. Once you mail in your PCM, our technicians will assess the symptoms of your module, calibrate the codes, and conduct an internal and external inspection. Once repairs are made, we\u2019ll test the unit to ensure its working correctly, update the programming codes, and retest the PCM before mailing it back to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experienced in these kinds of repairs and are willing to take the risk and make the attempt yourself, here&#8217;s what you\u2019ll need to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you\u2019ll need a 60\/40 rosin core solder. It must be rosin core, not acid core, since acid core solder can damage the circuit board itself. You\u2019ll also need DeoxIT, or a similar non-corrosive contact cleaner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the two small screws in your PCM cover, and carefully pry the closing tabs open. Remove the small cover, and set it to the side. Then remove the larger cover, and turn it over. On one side, you\u2019ll see an electrical connector that\u2019s soldered on. Clean off any potting compound, and reflow the solder, applying as little new solder as necessary to do the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the solder flows from each pad to the connector for that pad, without touching any other connectors and causing a short. Be very careful while you\u2019re doing this. Any damage to the copper circuits will permanently destroy your PCM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, clean all the contacts with contact cleaner, and reassemble your PCM. Sometimes this method doesn\u2019t work, but it\u2019s effective in the majority of cases. If your PCM still doesn\u2019t work, you\u2019ll need to replace it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Replacing Your PCM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re searching for a replacement PCM, it\u2019s important to keep in mind that PCMs are programmed for a specific make and model of vehicle. If you drive a 2007 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7-liter V6, you can\u2019t use just any PCM. You can\u2019t use just any Jeep PCM replacement. You need the PCM for that exact car.
