Five Ways to Avoid Being Ripped off at the Mechanic

Auto_Mechanic

Even newer model vehicles experience mechanical problems from time to time. Repairs often cost drivers hundreds of thousands of dollars, with little assurance that the problem won’t return. Most drivers trust the mechanic to tell them the truth, and to repair any damage. However, this is not always the case. What drivers need to realize is one important fact; the mechanic works to make money. This concept leads the average mechanic to infatuate the details of a mechanical problem, in hopes of charging the driver more money. As unethical as this scenario may be, this is exactly what happens most of the time. Nevertheless, there are ways to avoid becoming a victim of high repair fees.

Look for Expensive Diagnostics

Complete a thorough search or at least get an idea of what’s wrong, before visiting the mechanic. Look around for companies that offer free or cheap diagnostics. Even the dealership may offer maintenance free prevention. However, auto diagnostic shops can pinpoint the exact problem, and probably provide an estimate as well.

Use Coupons to Save Money

Most mechanic shops will not express the fact that they accept competitor coupons, and most of them will not advertise this information to the general public. Calling the shop beforehand and asking if they indeed accept competitor coupons can save a wasted trip. However, some shops might say they do not accept coupons, but when mechanic shops realize that other shops are offering discounts, they will most likely offer the same discount.

Never Fall for Cheap Prices

Look at the offers closely, before taking them at face value. Some coupons might suggest offering customers 25% or 50% off, but usually there is always, almost a catch. Look at the fine print, and ask questions before doing business with the shop. Get a clear understanding of the exact amount for the repairs.

Check Customer Reviews and Credentials

Look online for customer’s complaints. Good or bad, most customers will vent their frustration or satisfaction online for everyone to read. Ask friends, family and coworkers about their mechanic. Chances of finding a good, reliable mechanic is great, when the recommendations come from others.

Get it in Writing

Don’t believe everything mechanics or auto shops say. Quotes and estimates are often given over the phone, and in person the amount is normally higher. Write down the name of the mechanic, and the estimated amount agreed upon. Do not do business with an auto shop, without signing a contract or an agreement for a predetermined price. Be sure to check for accuracy on which repairs are to be completed, and the length of the warranty.
