How to Tell if Your New-But-After-Market Dodge PCM is Trustworthy

98-04_Dodge_Intrepid

The PCM–or powertrain control module–in a Dodge is responsible for controlling many of the electrical systems in the vehicle. This includes airflow to the engine, temperature and more. While all Dodge models are currently manufactured with a PCM installed, the fact is that many vehicle owners will replace their PCM with a new or after-market model. In some cases, the PCM will be replaced due to a repair issue. In other cases, the PCM replacement will be completed to improve engine performance. Regardless of why you have replaced your Dodge PCM, you may be wondering if you have purchased a quality product or if you need to replace the part with a better quality PCM. There are a few steps you can complete to determine if your PCM is a quality part.

Select the Part Carefully
When you begin shopping online for a new PCM to install in your Dodge, you will notice that you can purchase brand new or refurbished parts. Both new and refurbished parts may be either higher or lower in quality, so be sure to read consumer reviews before you make a purchase. You may also read warranty or return policies before you finalize your decision about which PCM to purchase. These parts are fairly easy to install and to replace as needed, so the best part to purchase is one that has a warranty and return policy that promotes your satisfaction.

Test Your Part Thoroughly
When you read consumer reviews about Dodge PCMs, you will be able to easily determine which parts have yielded the best results for other consumers. This can help you to make your purchase with confidence, but you do want to test your PCM when you receive and install it. Your PCM will impact how smoothly your vehicle runs when idling, if it stalls out at lights and more. Therefore, take time to test drive your vehicle at slower and faster rates of speed initially. Pay attention to the engine performance. If you notice any issues, you may need to return your part and order a better quality PCM.

A PCM is an integral part of a Dodge vehicle, and there may be times when a replacement is needed or desired. By focusing on these tips when you make your purchase and after you receive the part, you can more accurately determine if your new part is trustworthy and reliable.
